The site selected for the hospital was, however, steeply wooded; part of a large old ravine that became a fill site, partially useable for parking. Soil tests indicated that deep, expensive foundations would be necessary. To help minimize construction costs, yet take advantage of the steep site; a compact two-story footprint was developed, with the upper floor providing space for a clean dock, offices, medical suite and the nursery.
