City West
West End
Cincinnati, OH

glaserworks helped re-create a neighborhood.

City West is a traditional neighborhood development (TND) on the sites of two former public housing projects. The super-block layout of the 1940's housing projects removed the through-streets, disrupting the traditional city street pattern.

We reconnected the neighborhood streets to the surrounding grid. This 48 acre site contains several new streets, 972 dwelling units (senior housing, apartments and rowhouses) and approximately 10,000 sf of commercial space.  The neighborhood is within a 15 minute walking distance to Downtown Cincinnati.

We placed taller buildings along wider streets and shorter buildings along narrower streets to create appropriate street corridor scales. We created a boulevard, linking existing parks at both the north and south ends of the neighborhood and shaped an urban crescent park at its center.

Our desire to create pedestrian-scaled streets often brought us into conflict with the Cincinnati Subdivision Regulations and Zoning Code which had been developed to promote suburban-style  living. We negotiated with City officials to achieve a walkable, urban neighborhood.

City West won a 2004 Charter Award from the Congress for a New Urbanism, and a 2004 National AIA Community by Design award.
